5 Must-Have Props For Your Dark Academia Photoshoot

5 Must-Have Props For Your Dark Academia Photoshoot

The key to creating a successful Dark Academia photoshoot is to create a moody, intellectual, and scholarly atmosphere. This can be achieved by the use of props, expressions, and interactions between models to convey emotions and intellectual exploration.

To add to the Dark Academia aesthetics, be mindful of the location, setting, and lighting. Select indoor settings that convey the intellectual theme of Dark Academia, such as a library, university, or historical building. Ensure the lighting in the room is dim or soft to capture the mystery in Dark Academia.

For further guidance on how to create an authentic Dark Academia photoshoot, here are the 5 must-have props;

1. Vintage Books

Vintage books symbolize knowledge, enlightenment, and intellectualism, which are central themes in Dark Academia.

Photography is all in the details when selecting your vintage book, look for a book that has an aged cover, faded pages, and generally looks worn out. Stack the books together in varying height lengths and have one that is centrally placed and opened to depict the great desire to search for knowledge.

Additionally, to further enhance the storyline of the photoshoot, align the theme of the photoshoot with the theme of the books. For example, in an intimate Dark Academia photo shoot, you can use classic love poetry books.

Make sure that the book titles can be clearly read when using actual vintage books. However, when you have no access to classic literature, focus on the book tear and wear aesthetics.

2. Vintage Desk

Transport your views back to simpler, classic times by incorporating a carved wood, aged patina antique desk. This type of desk evokes the classic scholarly atmosphere that adds to the overall aesthetic of Dark Academia.

To capture the vintage desk’s old-world charm, position it in a well-lit area, perfectly arrange vintage books and old-fashioned stationery on it, and include a vintage chair. The additions will complement the vintage desk by creating more depth and authenticity.

During the photoshoot, use the vintage desk as your focal point by positioning yourself or your models around the desk and arranging props on it. By doing so, you draw attention to its details, character, and scholarly atmosphere.

3. Candles and Candleholders

Candles evoke the brooding and contemplative mood associated with Dark Academia through their soft, warm, and intimate lighting. Candleholders on the other hand evoke vintage and historical elements of the Dark Academia aesthetic. When combined, the two add visual interest and depth to the photo shoot.

Tapper and pillar candles are the best when selecting the type of candles to use. Go for traditional colored ones like ivory, burgundy, dark green, or black for a more authentic look. Select a vintage-looking candleholder made of brass or wrought iron to place the candles. Always make sure to be conscious of the sizes.

Strategically place the candleholder and candles to enhance the candlelight effect and moody atmosphere. To create the illusion that the candle has been used for some time, let the wax build up on the side. Most importantly, be cautious of the open flame and take necessary precautions to avoid any fire outbreaks.

4. Vintage Wardrobe

A vintage wardrobe is a nostalgic charm that perfectly complements the vintage and historical appeal of Dark Academia. For a more authentic look, focus on attires from the 1940s through the 1970s, which are considered timeless fashion choices, and add a sense of enduring style to your photos.

Dark Academia is often associated with a scholarly or academic atmosphere, hence select a classic scholarly appearance with tweed blazers, cardigans, turtlenecks, pleated skirts, oxford shoes, and vintage-style accessories like scarves and berets.

During the photoshoot, make sure you capture the intricate design of the dress to add depth and richness to your photos.

5. Quills and Inkwells

Nothing shouts historical intelligence better than Quills and Inkwells. Even today, these two are a symbol of knowledge and intelligence. Incorporating Quills and inkwells in your photoshoot symbolizes a deep appreciation for literature, writing, and critical thinking.

Additionally, they also create a sense of history when writing was a form of art that was valued, appreciated, and romanticized. Thus evoking a sense of nostalgia for a bygone era when handwritten letters, journals, and manuscripts were commonplace.

To add on to the aesthetic, you can include parchment showcasing the incredible craftsmanship of yourself or your model.

What will create a more nostalgic experience for the viewers; a parchment with a random text or a parchment with a famous classic quote?
