About Steamretro Owner
My name Malcolm Sinclair, owner of Steamretro store on Rebelsmarket since July 2013 from Spain.
At Steamretro, first and foremost, I design and make Steampunk Jewelry. We also sell Steampunk accessories, such as Aviator Goggles, T-shirts, Retro-futuristic style watches, hats and much more. We also have some Gothic jewelry like biker rings.
I have been a Goth since its inception in the 80s. I have always loved the alternative scene, and of course the music. I still watch old Goth bands live and have an amazing time. I am at a time in my life where I make choices about what career path to follow based on passion rather than from financial pressures.
As I developed this idea of Goth, the Steampunk genre was beginning to gather pace, and I wanted to get into it from the start.
My niche is predominately Steampunk, but I am always attracted to anything curious, dark, different, or just plain strange, so you can never be really sure what you will find in my Rebelsmarket store.
I think if you have a genuine interest and passion for your work, you can draw inspiration from anywhere. This passion makes your product stand out from the crowd. For me, the Steampunk and Gothic scene came naturally to me.
I remember as a kid searching out alternative fashion /music stores, and being enchanted by them. The smell, the sounds, the people, it was MY place, where I fitted. It wasn’t mainstream and that’s why it was cool. Well, today the world has moved online, and the kids into the alternative scene get the same feeling from their online experience from sites like RebelsMarket. At Steamretro, we try and give you that feeling.
As a seller on RebelsMarket, it’s a numbers game. If you try selling Steampunk jewelry on Ebay, sure if you have a great product, some people will find you, but there are also millions of people on Ebay looking for houses, cars, tools, pots and pans, etc. Rebelsmarket has a public already tailored to our product, so it’s a happy marriage! I can’t stress enough how important it is to have the right platform to sell your product. Personally I love Rebelsmarket, for the online marketing it does, for example the Steampunk and Victorian page on Facebook.
Steamretro has grown gradually but surely. We make sure to offer good service to customers to build confidence in the brand. Making sure I get top feedback, I spend a huge amount of time promoting my shop on social media sites. I have learned on the job the importance of building a good network of contacts, and the use of good keywords for people to find you.
I have immense fun, and get great satisfaction from my work. With the help of my wife we sell at many conventions also, which gives us great excuses to get dressed up.
Our designs have been featured on Spanish T.V a couple of times, and our products can be found in physical shops throughout Europe and we also have our first in U.S.A! We have one or two big hitters in the Steampunk world that wear our stuff, so we are enjoying riding the wave of our store.
Advice for Creatives
Be original, and don’t forget the world is a much easier marketplace in which to work today. Make full use of all the social media platforms out there, and get a good translator on your PC.
Networking, networking and more networking. My wife and I attend as many events and conventions as we can to get our brand name out there. Sometimes its not about the money, we are lucky that in our chosen niches [Steampunk and Gothic] we meet some of the best people out there, and there is always someone with a helpful idea, or contacts to a new group.
We also strongly believe that you must be part of the scene to be taken seriously.
The one piece of advice I would offer people, is, do something from the heart, the clients know the difference. I have had many jobs in my life, most have been second choices or compromises just to pay the bills. However, if you want your life to be truly satisfying, do something that you believe in 100%. It will bring its rewards both financially and emotionally.
