How To Pack For Your Road Trip

When the school year ends and you find yourself with a little extra time on your hands, you may want to opt for the tried and true tradition of a road trip. Whether you’re setting off to some unknown land with your friends or want to take a pre-planned road trip with the family, there are many things you’re going to want to have with you on-hand to make sure that you’re well prepared for anything that can come up with your road trip.

1. Navigation:

First and foremost, you need to know where you’re going. Navigation is perhaps one of the most important part of a road trip, without a proper map or GPS, you may get nowhere fast.

  1. Maps.
  2. Journal or Notebooks.
  3. Pens or pencils.
  4. GPS (If you don’t want to use a map).
  5. Compass.

2. Camping Equipment

While sleeping at a comfortable hotel may be what you’re considering when on a road trip, that isn’t always going to be possible if your driver is too tired to hit the road. You may find yourself camping for a few hours or over-night. Of course, if this is part of your road trip, you should already have these camping essentials with you on hand.

  1. Tent.
  2. Camping Mat.
  3. Pillow.
  4. Sleeping Bag.
  5. Blanket.

3. Important Documents:

One of the most overlooked things you must have with you on a road trip is the important documents. It’s easy to lose them in the mix when you’re trying to pack for a fun-filled adventure.

  1. Your ID/Passport. (Drivers license)
  2. Credit cards and money. * Make sure you have them stored in different places, just in case you lose your wallet.
  3. Car documents such as your registration. (Keep an extra copy on hand if you can)
  4. A copy of your bank TAN numbers.
  5. Traveler insurance documents.

4. Extras for your car:

Keeping these extras on-hand for your car will make sure that you’re prepared if an emergency happens. Make sure you get your car serviced before your road trip.

  1. Extra oil.
  2. Hand rack.
  3. Jumper cables.
  4. Gas can.
  5. Spare tire.

6. Other Basics:

There are a few basic must-haves to have in your car when you’re on the road. You never know when you’ll need them.

7. Hygiene Products:

No one wants to travel with a smelly road trip companion. If you want to make sure that you all have an enjoyable time, practice basic hygiene even on the road.

  3. Sunscreen.
  4. Powdered shampoo or eco-shampoo and soap.
  5. Tissues and Toilet paper.

8. Medications and First Aid:

Accidents happen and if you aren’t prepared for them, it can be a bit concerning. Having a basic first aid kit on hand will help to relieve the possible stress.

  1. Band-aids.
  2. Aspirin.
  3. Ibuprofen or Tylenol.
  4. Hand Sanitizer.
  5. Prescription paperwork.
  6. Any prescriptions.
  7. Bug spray.
  8. Anti-itch spray for bug bites.
  9. Emergency contact card.

9. Misc Must Haves:

More of the basics with a bit of a “must have” added on to it. These are absolute essentials if you plan on being on the road for longer than a day or two.

  5. Knife (pocket knife or other).
  6. Plastic cutlery.
  7. Lighter.
  8. Dish Towels.
  9. Ziploc bags.
  10. Trash bags.
  11. Books.
  12. Music.
  13. Sports equipment.

10. Clothing:

Prepare yourself for all weather on your road trip; ensure that your clothing is versatile and packed to reflect the weather you may face.
