International Profanity: Hilarious Insults From Around The World

Some people say that if you swear a lot it means you have a limited vocabulary, are unintelligent, or that you are unable to express yourself in a more elaborate and less offensive way.

I call bullshit.

In fact, studies have actually proven the contrary; research conducted by psychologists at Marist College NY found links between how fluent a person is in the English language and how fluent they are in swearing. So, in a nutshell - swearing is a sign of more intelligence, not less.

But, if using the word fuck as a verb noun and adjective is becoming a little tired or dated – you might want to step up your profanity game and get a little bit more creative.

So, in the spirit of this, we’ve put together some of the most interesting, outlandish, and downright awesome curse words from around the world! We’ve mixed it up a little and included some English curse words as well as other languages too – so you can pretend that you’re at least mildly cultured by crying out ‘che boludo’ (instead of ‘hey ballsack’) the next time you want to grab somebody’s attention.

Enjoy!

1) Tortchenfriedhof (German)

Funny insults and curse words from around the world

This delicious German curse word actually translates as ‘cake graveyard’, and is used to describe/insult someone as being a fat or overweight person. Takes fat shaming (and the term 'morbidly obese') to a whole new level.

2) Silabot (Amharuic)

Funny insults and curse words from around the world

This interesting phrase means ‘the fatty layer on my warm milk' – and is a clever, concise way of saying to someone ‘I have no use for you’. Kind of reminds me of the English slang terms ‘you’re about as much use as [insert useless thing here]’. My personal favourites are; a chocolate teapot, a lead parachute, and an inflatable dartboard.

3) Bellend (British)

Funny insults and curse words from around the world

A firm favourite in my vocab arsenal – a bellend is the (non-scientific) definition of the head of a penis and is usually used to describe somebody in a pretty derogatory way. Example: “Piers Morgan is a right bellend”.

4) Skitstovel (Swedish)

Funny insults and curse words from around the world

Skitstovel roughly translates as ‘shit boot’ in Swedish and is used in pretty much the same way you would use the term asshole (or arsehole, if you want to use the British equivalent). Example: “Piers Morgan is a total skitstovel”.

5) Bogan (Australian)

Funny insults and curse words from around the world

This Aussie term is used to refer to someone who is low-brow, unintelligent or generally unsophisticated. I’d say it’s the Australian equivalent of a US ‘redneck’ or a British ‘chav’ (see below)

6) Chav (British)

Funny insults and curse words from around the world

Chav is a relatively new derogatory term to describe a (typically young) lower-class person who’s brash, loutish, scummy, uncouth…you get the message. If you Google the word chav, it’s likely that the image results will feature at least one gaunt-faced young man wearing a baseball cap, holding a can of lager and/or smoking a fag (cigarette).

7) Kankerhond (Dutch)

Funny insults and curse words from around the world

If you were to call somebody a Kankerhond, you would actually be calling them a 'cancer dog' in Dutch. There is literally no fat on this insult - it's short, concise and quite interesting in that it combines an animal-based insult with a disease. Kind of like a shitweasel - but worse.

8) Pendejo (Spanish)

Funny insults and curse words from around the world

You can get pretty creative with this one, as Pendejo can either translate as the Spanish word for 'idiot' - or it could actually be used to refer to a single strand of pubic hair, if the Urban dictionary is anything to go by. Example: "You are the Pendejo in the urinal that is my life."

9) Jebiesz jeze (Polish)

Funny insults and curse words from around the world

This cool polish insult conjures up painful imagery, due to the fact that it translates as "you fuck hedgehogs". I love the fact that it's an accusatory statement too! Rather than telling someone to go and fuck a hedgehog, we're implying here that the painful deed has already been done.

10) Gay kocken offen yom (Yiddish)

Funny insults and curse words from around the world

The Yiddish term 'gay kocken offen yom' is interesting because it translates as 'go shit in the ocean'. I like it because it's a pretty strange insult - why would you tell someone to shit in the ocean? I can think of worse places to take a shit.

Do you have an interesting insult or curse word you think should be on the list? I'm always looking to build my offensive vocab arsenal - so please share it in the comments section below!
