The History of Palmistry
Palm reading is believed to have originated in the Far East and is strongly connected to India and the Hindu faith. The practice and acceptance of astrology and chiromancy spread to and through Europe by activity in the Papacy.
It is recorded that at least four popes in the sixteenth century exercised occult studies and astrology, including Pope Paul III (1534-1549). With papal practice popular, chiromancy and palm reading spread from the Vatican state through Italy and out to the rest of Europe.
With the advent of Pope Paul IV, however, things concerning divinatory science: including chiromancy rapidly changed. A papal edict was issued in the Index Expurgatorius (1559) which blacklisted forbidden studies. Not only was the study of subjects like chiromancy/palm-reading banned, but so were any books and authors writing on the occult arts.
As time went on and the hold of the Catholic Church over Europe slowly loosened, occult arts become more socially prevalent to the extent where now palm reading and other divinatory exercises are accepted and popularly practiced.
What is it, and how does it work?
Palm reading is the practice of interpreting a person’s character and fortune by ‘reading’ the various lines and mounts of one’s hand. In some traditions, the shape, sizes and characteristics of the fingers and fingernails, and the colour, shape and texture of the palm are read.
Palm reading as we know it today, has taken its roots from Greek mythology – taking on the framework of “Classical” palmistry. Each section of the palm and fingers is related to a specific god or goddess: and the features of that section indicate the nature of the subject and its respective characteristics. Some spiritualists state that the reading of one’s palm can be dependent on family traits or cosmological/astronomical beliefs.
The Reading
A reader begins with the ‘dominant’ hand – often the one the person writes with, or uses most often. The dominant hand is considered the represent the conscious mind, while the other hand concerns the subconscious. It is also thought that ideally, both hands should be read. Some palm readers believe that the left hand is representative of “what the gods give you” and the right is “what you do with what you do with what you have been given”: ones potential and their action.
There are four types of hands, which correspond to the four elements: earth, air, fire and water. From there, the lines and mounts are read as they represent different traits and characteristics. Here’s how to figure out what type of hand you have and how to read your lines:
The Hand Types:
Air Hands
Long and narrow, with square or rectangular palms and long fingers.
In palmistry, someone’s mental energy is envisioned beginning at the wrist and travelling the length of the fingers: therefore, the long palm indicates an active thinker, who is very curious and intellectual. Air-handed people are believed to be great communicators, who take great pride in being learned – they often find themselves bored at tasks they find too easy, and constantly feel the need to be mentally challenged.
Earth Hands
Large, wide and square-like palms, with generous and wide fingers, neither long nor short. Often appear quite dry and hard.
Earth-handed people are usually very practical and level-headed: their energy presents itself as steady, reliable and often resistant to change. These are the hands of the sensible, “get stuff done” sort, who would rather be out and about in the world than hanging around getting cabin fever! Generally, those with earth hands are very down-to-earth, pragmatic and not overly emotional.
Fire Hands
People with fire hands have wide and generous palms and look boxy, almost “stubby”: because of the shortness of the fingers.
An extremely stubby hand is a sign of a stubborn nature, especially when they have wide knuckles. The short palm indicates a hasty mind, which often correlates to how they approach decision-making. They beauty of fire-handed people is how they conceive new ideas and their passionate nature: albeit often short lived! Fire hands often find it difficult to “stick to their guns” – but command the centre of attention!
Water Hands
Water hands are long, much like air hands, but the quality in water hands is their immediate dampness or moistness on touch. Their palms are often soft and rounded with round mounts.
Water-handed people are highly emotional, with hearts of gold. They are highly motivated by emotional ‘currents’ in their lives: their emotional nature can be both positive and negative. They are extremely artistic and the energy of the hand and the soft rounded palm presents itself as gently as the person would.
The Lines
The heart line is about all matters concerning love.
A short heart line shows you have little interest in romance. A long, curvy heart line means you express feelings with ease and tact. A straight line running parallel to your life line means you are practical in affairs of the heart. A wavy heart line means what you would imagine – your love life follows a similar pattern! Ups and downs and many different love interests.
If your heart line starts under your index finger, you have a satisfying love life. If it starts beneath your middle finger, you are selfish in love. If it starts somewhere in between your first finger and your middle finger, you fall in love easily!
The head line shows intellect and wisdom.
A curved line shows creativity and spontaneity, while a straight line represents a more practical and structured person.
A short head line means you prefer physical activity rather than academic. A wavy line shows that you have a short attention span, while a deep, long line is evidence of a focused thinker.
If your head line is separated from your life line, it means you have a lust for life and an unquenchable thirst for adventure!
The life line represents one’s destiny or fate.

A long, deep life line shows your inner vitality, while a shallow life line shows you can be easily manipulated by others.
A break in the line shows major changes in lifestyle.
The fate line can be read with the life line to show the future (though not everybody has one)
A deep fate line shows that you are strongly controlled by destiny. If there are a lot of breaks in your fate line, it means that the direction of your life may change many times.
A fate line that is joined to the life line shows that you have taken your fate into your own hands!
