7 Must-See Halloween Movies Of 2022

"Halloween is my favorite holiday. It's like my Christmas."—Tech N9ne, offbeat rap artist

The big night is almost here—are you ready? But, are you ready? Suppose you're a devout disciple of the Halloween season and you're looking to get into a deliciously demonic mood for 31st October; we have just the thing to put you into that mood. One of the best things you can do is have an epic scary movie marathon. And, we have the flicks for you.

Oh yes, we have a few motion pictures up our sleeve that will make you cry, cringe, scream, shout, panic, laugh (hysterically, so), and have you cowering under the covers. Everything is covered here—no horror stone will go unturned if you dare to watch.

So, if you're staying in this Halloween or you're looking to get all fired up for your big 31st October shindig, here are seven must-see indie Halloween movies for this year's festivities.

Brace yourself, fellow Halloween fanatics; it's going to be a bumpy ride.

The Field Guide to Evil

As an anthology flick, The Field Guide to Evil is somewhat of a mixed bag, and decidedly so. Every type of horror concept, format, angle, or inspiration is covered within its one hour and 57 minutes running time—from ancient myths & legends right through to skin-crawling national emergencies and beyond.

This mile-a-minute flick makes the perfect Halloween movie to watch before going to a party, as you never know what's lurking around the next corner.

Not for the faint of heart, believe us.

The Dead Don't Die

The Dead Don't Die is an epic Halloween film starring the mighty Bill Murray, Adam Driver, and Chloe Sevigny.

The brainchild of longstanding cult horror film icon Jim Jarmusch has wowed horror fanatics, been panned by critics—and has generally generated a great deal of popularity in the Indie world.

Weird, silly, spooky, dark—and well worth watching, again and again, and again.

Velvet Buzzsaw

Nightcrawler director Dan Gilroy has teamed up with Jake Gyllenhaal once again to poke away at LA's upper-crust art scene in horror style.

Part razor-sharp satire, part gut-punching sophisticated horror, Velvet Buzzsaw is sleek, stylish, and multi-layered—there's more to this movie than meets the eye.

On the surface, it's about a bunch of haunted paintings, but if you delve beneath the skin, you'll find piles of subtext based on exploitation within the world of fine art.

Us

Directed by 'Get Out's John Peele and starring Lupita Nyong'o, Winston Duke, and Elisabeth Moss, Us is a twisted, mind-bending thrill-ride from start to finish.

What starts as your classic home invasion flick quickly degenerates into a disturbing mystery peppered with horrific doppelgängers as well as disturbingly original themes that will make you wince and say, 'wow.' The doppelgängers look eerily similar to zombies given their speech and appearance. Their speed and strength are even more formidable.

Us is a Halloween movie that you must have on your list in the lead-up to fright night.

Tigers Are Not Afraid

Arguably one of the darkest and most harrowing of fables ever told, Tigers Are Not Afraid is a horror that explores drug cartels and the negative impact on their native lands.

This film is told through the eyes of five homeless children; this spine-chilling fantasy-thriller is as poignant as it is scary and conveys a vital message of real-world tragedy in a way that will grip you and won't let go.

If you're going to a party on Halloween night, this might not be the flick to watch before donning your cosplay costume, but it's certainly worth your time during the scary season—so don't miss out.

The Perfection

A wonderfully binge-able trash horror, The Perfection will get you all revved up and ready for the scary season.

Two world-class musicians enter a war of wills, then it all goes a bit wrong, and a bit more wrong, and so on.

This movie is odd, nail-biting, and filled with dark surprises when you're least expecting them—so fire up Netflix and get ready for the madness to ensue. If you indeed are a fan of darkness and mystery, then go ahead and check out ghost costumes that add a twist to trash horror.

High Life

As this year has marked 50 years since the first moon landing, how could we have a Halloween movie list without throwing a space-themed flick into the mix? The short answer: we couldn't.

That said, this deep-space adventure starring Robert Pattinson and Juliette Binoche is strange, ambitious, adrenaline-pumping, and shocking in equal measures. A real mind-twister, this space convict and the black hole-based masterpiece will make you think long and hard about human nature (and not the good parts) while entertaining the soul out of you.

Oh, and the best thing is that the film is such a head-twister that you might have to watch it again to understand it fully. And probably a third time, too.

"But I love Halloween, and I love that feeling: the cold air, the spooky dangers lurking around the corner."—Evan Peters, American Horror Story

This wonderfully diverse selection of independent horror flicks makes for a terrifying Halloween movie marathon session. Every one of these motion pictures is very different but equally epic in their own right—and you should watch them during October, or else [insert spine-chilling consequence here!]…

Wherever you are, whoever you are, or whatever you're doing this Halloween to inspire fear, we hope you have the fun-filled (and lustful) time that you deserve. And, if you need a little added inspiration to mark the occasion in ghastly style, you should check these out:
