8 Bizarre And Creepy Things That Have Really Happened On Friday 13th!

For plenty of people, Friday 13th is considered an inherently unlucky date - but have you ever wondered why?

While there's no definitive answer as to where this age-old superstition comes from one thing is sure; when you look back through modern history there are some pretty freaky things that happened on Friday the 13th.

Here's a list of a few of them:

A Plane Crash That Resulted In Cannibalism

In 1972 Plane Crashed in the Andes on Friday 13th

On October 13, 1972 Uruguayan air force flight 571 crashed in the remote Andes, killing more than a quarter of the passengers on board. The survivors tried to shelter in the wreckage, but days after the crash avalanche swept over the site and killed a further 8 people.

As the weeks went on and the situation became desperate, the survivors resorted to feeding on the dead bodies of passengers that had been frozen in the snow. After two horrific months, the remaining 16 passengers were finally rescued on 23 December.

Buffalo Buried in 24 Inches of Snow - In October!

Buffalo NY hit with heavy snowfall on Friday 13th

New York is used to seeing heavy snowfall, but 24 inches in October is pretty much unheard of. But that's exactly what happened on Friday, 13 October 2006, when nearly half 1 million people lost power as an unseasonable amount of snow fell over Buffalo and the surrounding suburbs.

The Second Worst Day in Market History (At The Time)

Stock market crash on Friday 13th 1987

The stock market crash that occurred on Friday, October 13, 1989 has been referred to by some as Black Friday or the Friday 13th mini-crash. To cut a long (and convoluted story about a leveraged buyout that helped trigger the collapse of the junk bond market) short, the stock market fell by a mammoth 6.91 percent! At the time this was the second worst day in market history.

Hitchcock Came Into The World - Probably Kicking and Screaming

Alfred Hitchcock was born on Friday 13th

Carlos Grillo

Yep that's right, the famously twisted and macabre director Alfred Hitchcock was born on Friday 13th 1899! He has been dubbed the master of suspense and is the mastermind behind such films as 'Psycho' (which is regarded as being the first example of the ‘slasher’ film genre) and 'The Birds', so it seems only fitting that he would be born on such a fateful date.

Bob Renphrey Had a Bad Time

Bob Renfrey - Fired on Friday 13th

If this is the first time you've heard of retired bus conductor Bob Renphrey (which it probably is), then spare a thought for poor Bob today, and on every other Friday the 13th from now until the end of your days! Bob decided to spend every Friday 13th in bed after a run of extremely bad luck on the fateful day during the early 1990s - and he sounds like one of the unluckiest men alive!

Bob’s Friday the 13th achievements include: walking through a plate glass door, losing his job, falling into a river, crashing a motorcycle, writing off 4 cars and hitting his wife in the face with a stick that he was throwing to a dog - which resulted in her hospitalisation.

A Plane Crash Killed 174 People in Russia

Reader's Digest

On the same fateful day that the Uruguayan air force flight 571 crashed in the Andes and subsequently resulted in the survivors resorting to cannibalism, 174 people were killed when Russian airliner crashed on a landing near Moscow. At the time, this crash was considered the world's worst aviation disaster. Friday 13 October 1972 really was a devastating day for air travel.

Some Terrible People Were Born

Soul Sanctuary

There have been notable celebrities, politicians and general persons of interest born on Friday the 13th in recent history. But a few notable names include one of the worst fellows ever born: Nathan Bedford Forrest, a founder of the Ku Klux Klan, and Margaret Thatcher: one of the most polarising figures (and that's me trying to put it politely) in British political history.

Billions Are Lost Each Year

Billions are lost worldwide on Friday 13th

Friday the 13th is bad for business, with the Stress Management Centre and Phobia Institute estimating that between 700 million and 800 million is lost every Friday 13th because people refuse to purchase major items, travel, or even conduct business. But think about it, would you really put a down payment on a house on Friday the 13th, or sit your ass on a plane? After writing this list, I know I wouldn't.
