Hi :)
Sugar skulls are everywhere! And with good reason, they are gorgeous and colorful!
"Mexico,
abundant in sugar production and lacking money to buy fancy imported
European church decorations at the time, learned quickly from the friars
how to make sugar art for their religious festivals.
Sugar
skulls represented a departed soul, had the name written on the forehead
and was placed on the home ofrenda or gravestone to honor the return of
a particular spirit."
Ok, that was a short cultural history
lesson for you :) I love how so many cultures can be so different! So to
honor this beautiful culture, here is my rendition of the sugar skull
:)
Each skull is hand sculpted and I made them look as close to
anatomically correct as possible. The eye sockets are hollowed out and
painted black. There are blue spiderwebs painted on the top of the
skulls and red flower petals around the eye sockets.
On the back
of the skulls is an orange flower and emerald green swirls. Very bright
and colorful. Now the fun part...the skulls were sculpted from glow in
the dark clay, so they glow with the painted parts as a sharp contrast,
very cool! :)
The skulls are glazed to protect the paint. They are about 3/4 of an inch tall/long and are highly detailed :)
The
beads are made of glass and have multitude of colors swirled in them,
some have sparkle in them, they are very pretty and complement the
skulls very well.
Everything is hanging from a silver wire.
