Why Are Rebels Market Products Made Outside the USA?

Where things are made

Rebels Market is an American company based in Woodside, California. We design our products here, then make them with long-term specialist leather workshops in León, Mexico; Ubrique, Spain; and Lahore, Pakistan. We work this way because each region has deep experience in leather construction, skilled makers, and the production capability to build individual orders rather than only standardized inventory.

Leather selection begins before cutting, with the hide, finish, hand, and intended use.

The short answer is simple: we choose where a product is made based on the leather-working expertise the product needs, not on a belief that one country automatically makes better goods than another.

Rebels Market is based in Woodside, California. The styles, fit approach, product direction, and specifications are developed here. The physical making happens with a small group of specialist partner workshops in León, Ubrique, and Lahore.

Country of manufacture is not a quality grade. Materials, construction, workmanship, finishing, and quality control are what determine whether a product is well made.

Why not make everything in the USA?

Leather behaves differently from a perfectly uniform synthetic sheet, so material judgment matters.

The United States has skilled leatherworkers and shoemakers. Our decision is not based on the idea that good leather work cannot be done here.

Our model is built around making individual leather products after a customer orders, often with fit information and customization details that need to be incorporated before production begins. We therefore need workshop partners that already have the people, equipment, material knowledge, and production systems for the type of leather product being made.

For us, the right question is not simply, “Can this be made in the USA?” It is, “Which workshop has the right experience for this product and can make it consistently to the specification we require?”

Why León, Mexico?

León has a long-established footwear and leather-goods industry, with shoemaking, leather supply, components, and related skills concentrated in one region.

That matters because a good shoe is not only an upper sewn to a sole. Pattern cutting, lasting, welt or sole construction, heel building, edge finishing, and final finishing all have to work together. Working in a region with an established footwear ecosystem gives us access to makers who already understand those processes.

Why Ubrique, Spain?

Ubrique is known for specialist leather-goods work, particularly refined cutting, stitching, edge finishing, and smaller leather constructions where precision and finish matter.

We use specialist partners there when their experience fits the product. The point is not the country name on its own. The value is the concentration of people who work with leather every day and have developed the judgment that comes from repetition.

Why Lahore, Pakistan?

Pakistan has a substantial leather and leather-goods manufacturing base. Our Lahore partners bring experience across footwear and leather garment production, including products that require more handwork, more customization, or more varied construction than a conventional ready-made production line.

That flexibility matters to a made-after-order model because the workshop is not simply repeating thousands of identical pieces in standard sizes.

Is lower labor cost part of the reason?

Handwork remains part of cutting, pattern placement, and preparation.

Yes, economics are part of every manufacturing decision.

Labor costs differ between California, Mexico, Spain, and Pakistan. Pretending otherwise would not be credible. Working with specialist workshops in different regions allows us to put more of the product cost into the leather, construction, fit service, finishing, and individual production rather than building the entire price around one of the world's highest labor-cost markets.

But lower labor cost is not the same thing as lower skill.

A poorly run workshop is a poor choice regardless of country. A skilled workshop with the right materials, experienced makers, clear specifications, and strong quality control can produce excellent work anywhere.

Does “made outside the USA” mean lower quality?

No. A country label tells you where the work happened. It does not tell you how well the work was done.

To judge a leather shoe, boot, or jacket, look at the things that actually affect the finished product:

  • the leather and whether it suits the product
  • the construction method
  • the quality of stitching and seam work
  • the sole, heel, lining, hardware, and other components
  • the accuracy of cutting and assembly
  • edge finishing and surface finishing
  • left-to-right balance on footwear
  • whether the finished item matches the confirmed order details

Those are more useful measures than assuming “Made in USA” is automatically good or “Made outside the USA” is automatically poor.

Why not use one workshop for everything?

Leather shoes, rugged boots, refined dress footwear, and jackets do not all require exactly the same skills.

We would rather match the product to the workshop than force every category through one facility simply because it makes the supply chain easier to explain.

Different workshops can be better suited to different constructions, materials, or types of finishing. Our role is to define the product, fit approach, and expected standard, then work with the specialist partner that is best suited to make it.

What remains Rebels Market's responsibility?

Using specialist partner workshops does not remove our responsibility for the finished product.

Rebels Market develops the product direction in California, confirms the order and fit path, works with the workshop on the required specifications, and expects the finished item to match the confirmed order details and craftsmanship standard.

Our workshops are partners. They are not factories we claim to own, and they are not anonymous suppliers selected only because they are inexpensive.

Our manufacturing model

Designed in Woodside, California.

Made with long-term specialist leather workshops in León, Ubrique, and Lahore.

Built after the customer orders rather than pulled from finished inventory.

Why this model fits what we are trying to build

Standard retail works best when a company predicts which sizes will sell, manufactures inventory in advance, and tries to sell through that inventory later.

Our approach starts with the person ordering.

For customers using the measurement path, we can use the measurements and fit information they submit before production. For customers who already know their size and choose to keep it, the item is made in that selected size.

That model needs flexible, skilled production partners more than it needs a warehouse full of finished sizes.

The label matters less than the work

We understand why customers ask where something is made. It is a reasonable question, and we think the answer should be specific.

Rebels Market is an American company. We design our products in California. We make them with specialist leather workshops in Mexico, Spain, and Pakistan because those partners have the experience and capabilities we need for the products we sell.

We would rather explain that clearly than turn a country-of-origin label into a shortcut for quality.
