Leather Jacket Care Guide: How to Remove Wrinkles and Creases

Rebels Market leather care guide

Leather moves, folds, and develops character as you wear it. Some creases are temporary, especially after shipping or storage. Others form naturally at the elbows, shoulders, and waist as the jacket breaks in. This guide explains how to tell the difference, what you can safely smooth at home, and when it is better to leave the leather alone or ask a professional.

Creasing is a normal response when leather bends; the pattern and severity matter more than the mere presence of a crease.

You open the box, lift out your leather jacket, and notice a fold running across the body or sleeve.

That can be worrying, especially if you expected the leather to arrive perfectly flat.

Most of the time, a storage or shipping crease is not a defect. Leather is flexible. If it has been folded or compressed, it can temporarily hold that shape.

The safest approach is usually the least aggressive one.

Start with time, gravity, and gentle handling. Heat should never be the first answer.

First, identify the kind of crease

Not every line in a leather jacket needs to be removed.

What you are seeing What it usually means What to do
Shipping or folding crease A broad line caused by the jacket being folded or compressed Hang it properly and allow the leather to relax
Storage wrinkle The jacket was folded, crowded, or hanging on a poor hanger Reshape it on a broad hanger and give it time
Wear crease Natural movement at elbows, shoulders, waist, or pockets Usually leave it alone. This is part of the jacket breaking in
Sharp permanent fold or surface damage The leather may have been heavily compressed, overheated, dried out, or damaged Stop experimenting and ask a leather-care professional

Method 1: Hang the jacket and let gravity work

This is the safest place to start.

Use a broad, sturdy hanger that supports the shoulders. A narrow wire hanger can create new pressure points and distort the shoulder line.

Zip or fasten the jacket, arrange the collar and sleeves naturally, and leave space around it so it is not being pushed by other clothes.

Then leave it alone at normal room temperature.

Light shipping wrinkles can begin relaxing within a day or two. Deeper folding lines can take longer.

Start here

1. Put the jacket on a wide hanger.

2. Smooth the panels gently with clean hands.

3. Let it hang in a dry, climate-controlled room.

4. Recheck it before trying anything more aggressive.

Method 2: Wear the jacket

Sometimes the best way to relax a new leather jacket is simply to wear it.

Your body gives the jacket gentle warmth. Your shoulders, elbows, and torso move the leather in the direction it was designed to move.

If the crease came from packing rather than damage, normal wear can help the leather settle back into its intended shape.

This also helps distinguish a temporary fold from a natural wear crease. A packing line may soften. A crease at the elbow will usually return because that is where your arm bends.

Method 3: Use indirect steam carefully

For smooth finished leather, mild indirect humidity can sometimes help relax a stubborn storage wrinkle.

The key word is indirect.

One conservative method is to hang the jacket in a bathroom while a hot shower creates steam. Keep the jacket away from the water itself. The leather should not become wet or hot.

After a short period in the humid room, remove the jacket, smooth the creased area gently with your hands, then let it hang and dry naturally at room temperature.

Do not steam every leather the same way

Suede, nubuck, waxed leather, distressed finishes, painted leather, and other specialty finishes can react differently to moisture.

If you do not know the leather or finish, skip the steam and start with hanging and normal wear. For a valuable jacket or a deep crease, professional care is the safer choice.

Can you use a garment steamer?

It is possible to use a garment steamer on some smooth finished leathers, but it is easier to overdo than bathroom humidity.

If the jacket's care instructions allow it, keep the steamer well away from the leather, keep it moving, and test an inconspicuous area first. You are trying to introduce light humidity, not heat the surface or saturate it.

Never press the steamer head against the jacket.

Should you condition the leather?

Conditioner can help leather that has become dry and stiff, but it is not a wrinkle-removal tool.

If the jacket is dry, a leather conditioner appropriate for that specific smooth leather can restore some suppleness and make the material easier to relax naturally.

Use a small amount, test it first on a hidden area, and follow the care product's instructions. Some conditioners can darken leather.

Do not use ordinary smooth-leather conditioner on suede or nubuck unless the product specifically says it is safe for that material.

What about suede and nubuck jackets?

Suede and nubuck need a different approach because the visible surface is a nap rather than a smooth finished grain.

For light folding, start with a broad hanger and time.

After the jacket has relaxed, a suede or nubuck brush can help lift and even the nap if it has been flattened.

Avoid oils, waxes, ordinary leather conditioner, direct steam, and improvised household treatments unless they are specifically intended for suede or nubuck.

For a deep crease, water mark, or flattened area that does not recover, use a cleaner who works specifically with leather and suede garments.

Jacket fit depends on proportion through the shoulders, chest, sleeves, waist, and length, not only the size label.

Can you iron a leather jacket?

We do not recommend direct ironing as a home fix.

An iron concentrates heat in a small area. Too much heat can dry the leather, change the finish, create shine, flatten texture, or permanently set a damaged area.

Some leather professionals use controlled heat and protective barriers when working on garments, but that is very different from placing a household iron directly on your jacket.

Do not use these shortcuts

  • Hair dryer or heat gun: concentrated heat can dry or distort leather.
  • Radiator or space heater: direct heat can harden and shrink the material.
  • Soaking the jacket: water can alter shape, finish, color, and drying behavior.
  • Heavy books or pressing: compressing leather can create new marks instead of removing the old ones.
  • Hard pulling: leather can stretch permanently if you force it.
  • Household wrinkle sprays: products designed for fabric are not automatically safe for leather finishes.

What if the jacket arrived with a deep fold?

Hang it first. Give the leather time to return toward its natural shape.

If a deep shipping fold remains after the jacket has been properly hung and worn, document it with clear photographs before applying conditioner, moisture, heat, or another treatment.

If the line looks like more than normal packaging compression, contact us so the jacket can be assessed before you try to alter the leather.

Some creases are supposed to stay

Leather is not a wrinkle-free synthetic shell.

A jacket that is actually worn will begin to show where your body moves. Elbows bend. Shoulders rotate. The waist folds when you sit. Pockets change shape as you use them.

Those lines are part of the jacket becoming yours.

The goal of leather care is not to keep the jacket looking untouched forever. It is to prevent avoidable damage while allowing the leather to age naturally.

A crease from a shipping box is something to relax. A crease from years of wearing the jacket may be part of what makes the jacket yours.

How to prevent deep storage creases

  • Store the jacket on a wide, supportive hanger.
  • Do not crowd it tightly between other garments.
  • Avoid long-term folded storage.
  • Keep it away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
  • If the jacket becomes damp, let it dry naturally before storing it.
  • Use a breathable garment cover for long-term storage rather than sealing damp leather in plastic.
  • Follow the care method for the actual leather type, especially for suede and nubuck.

Quick answers

Will hanging remove every crease?

No. It works best for light folding and storage wrinkles. Natural wear creases and deeply set folds may remain.

How long should I hang the jacket before doing anything else?

Give it at least a day or two before escalating. Leather responds slowly, and aggressive treatment too early can create a bigger problem than the original wrinkle.

Can I steam my jacket in the bathroom?

For many smooth finished leathers, gentle indirect bathroom humidity can help relax a storage wrinkle. Keep the jacket away from the water and direct heat. Do not assume the same method is suitable for suede, nubuck, or specialty finishes.

Should a new leather jacket have any creases?

Some natural grain variation and light folding can occur. What matters is whether the jacket settles into its intended shape and whether the leather surface itself is undamaged.

Can leather conditioner remove creases?

Not by itself. Conditioner helps dry smooth leather remain supple. It does not erase normal wear lines or repair a deep structural fold.

When should I use a professional?

Use a leather-care professional for deep set folds, heat damage, water damage, unusual discoloration, valuable specialty leather, or any crease you are not comfortable treating yourself.

Know the leather before you treat it

Leather care depends on what the jacket is made from and how the surface was finished.
