How to Be A Goth And Look Like A Boss

Are you looking to explore the mysterious world of goth culture? Do you want to learn more about the fashion, music, and lifestyle associated with this dark subculture? Then you’ve come to the right place! In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know about how to be a goth. From the essential items and wardrobe pieces to the best goth music and films, you’ll soon be well-versed in the ways of the goth. So, let’s get started!

The ever-changing fashion trends have proven that Goth dressing as a style is more than just dying the hair black, choice of clothing or even trying to look morbid. Being Goth is a conscious choice to neglect the mainstream trends and standards, and not putting on black clothes. Wearing black clothes and putting on pale makeup is just the realm of the surface gothic.

Read on to find out a few pointers you need to keep in mind if you are planning to be a true Goth, other than just the black clothing:

  • First of all, it’s very important for you to understand that mainstream trends are not working for you and therefore an alternative is necessary. Goth is generally a style that is different from what is accepted and is yet to be explored and be accepted. This mindset is key for anybody who wants to start wearing Goth clothing.

  • You also need to understand that the word Goth has some historical origins which have very little to do with pale makeup and dark clothing which originated from an ancient tribe known as Visigoths. They are said to have invaded ancient Rome and the term was interchangeable with the barbarian. Presently, Goth heritage has remained in the clan or network of Goth followers and the notion of non Goths towards Goths is, that it is something abnormal and at the same time barbaric and strange.

  • You will also need to understand that your decision to wear muted colors or all colors at the same time (black) is about your idea of power and not anything to do with fashion choice. A large number of Goths perceive the darker tone as an absorption of light and energy, which translates to power. A number of Goths reject the idea of wearing dark clothing, considering it superficial branding tactic and because clothes regardless of the color mean little.

  • Among other things, you will need to accept that your choice of being Goth will automatically distort the general perception of you as an individual, which is by non Goths and the Goths. A wide majority of people don’t understand why you would try to find an alternate perception about the world, so they will criticize your choices.

  • You also need to realize that being Goth does not only mean listening to bands and musical genres that are dictated by teenagers wearing black clothing. A true Goth looks for the type of music that gives an alternative notion, a unique beat and a rejection of the overly constructed and branded bands. That, therefore, means that a Goth who only listens to what other Goths tell them to listen to beats the very purpose of developing a non-conformist lifestyle.

  • You need to be well informed about the decision that you are about to make. Read books on the same if you can browse the internet and go through sites that offer alternative perception or give no focus to mainstream trends. Whatever you choose to read does not necessarily have to have a modern context, keep mind that the need to break free from the usual traditions has a long history.

The above key pointer are just some of the things you need to keep in mind as you gear toward the desire to break free from the societal norms. Remember that being a Goth is more than just the surface impressions, but rather a conscious decision on art, lifestyle and perception.
