There’s something magical about liking “nerdy” things. Sure, you get classified as lame, and sometimes that can be difficult. But being a nerd is really just about taking pleasure in the small things. Being a nerd means that we get happy from something as simple as buying a comic, seeing a new superhero film, or finding out your favorite author extended a new book to the series. Occasionally, we will get made fun of but, on top of taking happiness in the simple things, we are able to meet other people who find joy in those exact same things.
Keep It Subtle
You don’t have to go over-the-top to include your likes in your outfit, though that is always an option. The best way to strut your nerdiness without it being distracting is by incorporating items from your fandom into your wardrobe. Whether you choose a belt, beanie, or just a tee, there is always at least one way to slyly incorporate your true nerd-self into your outfit.
You can not dress as Batman for work, no matter how much you want to. This is why it’s important to have the ability to express yourself in a less obvious way. As horrible as it is, wearing a shirt that says “I love Harry Potter,” is seen as unprofessional and childish more often than not. Though this is some serious bullshit, it’s the sad reality that the nerdy/professional adult must face. In a jumble of meetings, dinners, presentations, weddings, and whatever else your adult life entails, it can seem nearly impossible to wear anything even remotely geeky anywhere besides bed. Due to all of this, it’s important to know how to keep your wardrobe exclamations of love on the quieter end. There are many ways to achieve this goal, though, so don’t worry about the lacking possibilities.
Belts- Belts are pretty awesome. In fact, one of my staple items is a Harley Quinn belt that I wear almost every day. You can’t see the belt when I wear it with most outfits, but knowing that I’m wearing it makes me feel happy and secure. When your nerdy belt does show, it’s normally so inconspicuous that only other people from your nerd group ever notice it. You also have a few options when it comes to belts because the actual belt can be related to your fandom or just the belt buckle. Not only are belts easily concealed, they also offer a decent amount of options.
Scarves- Scarves are like belts and hat, they are easy to wear, but they aren’t in your face. You have a lot of options with scarves too. Whether you just sport a certain color, a pattern, a logo, or even a quote. On top of the option of pattern/color, you can choose how thick your scarf is, fabric, and whether or not it’s an infinity scarf. You can also get creative in how your knot a scarf! They are the perfect fall item for letting your geek flag fly.
Hats- Hats are probably the most popular fall option for letting your nerd hang out. This is probably because hats come in so many different styles, plus you can put patches on them making them customizable. You can go between beanies, baseball, snapbacks, or whatever other type of hat it is that you enjoy and all are guaranteed to look decent. The one drawback to hats is that they are pretty much only applicable to casual settings. But hey, winter is here, and everyone loves a hat to keep them warm.
Tee Shirts- Tee shirts are the most popular and easy to find nerd item on the market, making them easy to locate for just about everyone. You can also hide your tee shirt underneath a blazer or jacket which can make them office/grown up life appropriate. Wearing your superhero clothes underneath your regular adult clothes definitely, has a Superman effect on the ego, and is a pretty great way to boost anyone’s self-confidence. If you look hard enough, you can find some pretty nice tee shirts that are fitted, well-made, and not too loud.
Sneakers- Sneakers are another item that manages to be low-key but still noticeable to the trained eye, plus having unique sneakers is cool in general. This is a bomb way to nonchalantly mention your favorite video game when someone exclaims how awesome your shoes are. “Oh yeah, they’re from this video game I play. Oh, you want to hear about it? Well, I guess I can tell you some facts,” then boom, you just broke the stereotype of all nerds being lame. Sneakers are also super easy to style, and they’re one of the millions of things you can DIY.
Flats- Staying with the trend of shoes, if you want something a little more classy and high end you can get nerdy flats. You can still DIY these, but they manage to be easier to pair with fancier outfits like dresses and skirts. Flats are a great way to keep it classy while staying true to yourself, and again are an object that is definitely more difficult to spot. If you want to bring an heir of sophistication to your nerdy wardrobe, you should for sure have a pair of flats.
Socks- Socks and stockings are probably the most discreet items that can enhance your nerdy closet as they are very rarely seen. Socks are a great choice if you’re someone who has to wear pants suits to the office and want to spice it up a bit. With pant suits, you will most likely only see your socks when you sit, and a lot of people use their socks as a way to bring a new splash of color to their normally serious attire.
Tights/Leggings- Tights and leggings are not only a large piece but they can manage to bring your nerd to an adorable, fashionable level. You can wear tights/leggings in everyday life and to nice events, and geeky tights are barely noticeable when worn under a decent skirt. If you wear thick tights or leggings with a wool skirt, you’ll be able to stay warm, nerdy, and fashion forward.
Sweatshirts- Sweatshirts are another great piece for keeping you warm and being loud about your love for your geek group. Though you can’t really wear sweatshirts to the office or to a nice party like with tights, you can find them easily and wear them in your regular life of running errands or driving to/from work. They’re a lot less versatile than some other items, but they will surely keep you warm during the colder months and are awesome for basic lounging.
Jackets- Jackets manage to do the same things that sweatshirts do when it comes to staying warm, but they are much more usable. Bomber and jean jackets are great for nerding up with patches, fabric markers, and simple stitching making them an easy DIY and extremely customizable.
Eye Catching Jewels
One of my favorite ways to incorporate my geeky loves into my daily life is with jewelry, and you can find high-end pieces this way. If you want a quality piece that will last for a very long time but still express your odd loves, jewelry is the best way to go. It may cost a bit more than regular clothing, but you will be able to wear it practically anywhere, and it’ll last forever.
Earrings- Earrings come in all shapes and sizes, which allows a lot of choices when it comes to picking a pair. You can choose if you want some small studs or large hanging pieces, and you’re even set if you have plugs. You can choose how nice you want to go with earrings and how much you want to spend on them, making them accessible to all. They really are a great everyday piece to incorporate into daily life.
Necklaces- Necklaces are really simplistic to find nerdy pieces in, and they can be a fantastic accessory to wear with your regular clothes. One of my favorite nerdy items I own is a Golden Snitch necklace I got a million years ago. It makes a great statement piece with any outfit and is super elegant.
Charm Bracelets- Charm bracelets are amazing for wearing every day because they’re so small and compact. You can buy a whole charm bracelet devoted to what you like or just one charm that you add to a bracelet you already have. You can control exactly which charms you put on the bracelet as well, and they are one hundred percent personable.
