Bondage Pants

Punk bondage pants, also known as bondage trousers, are clothing characterized by straps, rings, buckles, chains, and zippers in their structure. The presence of rings and chains brings about a BDSM kind of vibe. BDSM is an erotic practice that mostly involves discipline, bondage, submission, and dominance. Bondage pants come in a range of colors, styles, and patterns; from the tapering, pentagram, and spiked, to gothic and mesh leggings.

Men’s leather bondage trousers have been worn by members of youth subcultures such as goths, punks, and even ravers. Although most are found in their original black style with white stitching, other varieties also exist. You can still acquire yours in different colors like blue, hot pink, white, or green. All the versions available also have varied colors used in stitching. While the guy’s bondage pants variety tends to feature larger pockets, and more metal details such as skulls and chains, women's bondage pants, on the other hand, are a bit different. They are mostly tailored with minimum metallic decorations. Punk bondage pants for women also have features like ribbons, tartans, and laces that add a more feminine touch to the pieces.

How Did They Come to Be?

Though most people previously considered them as fetish wear, several punks claim that the can be drawn back to homeless people. These homeless people had developed a habit of putting straps on their pants to help them hold on to trains. The idea prompted some British designers, Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood, to develop them as a punk subculture in the late 1970s.  After a while, sex pistols such as Adam Ant and Jordan, who previously got their pairs from McLaren/ Westwood's shop, started making them infamous. For the longest time, there had been some controversy at certain schools in the United States about the pants being a danger to the school property in terms of supposed sexual inappropriateness. This controversy is what caused them to be banned entirely from certain schools.

Between the 1990s to mid-2000s, guys bondage pants went through many reinventions. Tripp NYC's went ahead to create a signature design that merged the straps and chains with the bright linings and baggy legs of phat pants. This reinvention gained momentum as a viral statement piece, especially among U.S teenagers. Additionally, in the early 20s, a few college students also started acquiring the clothing. Later on, they became very popular among members of the heavy metal, raver, goth, and gamer subcultures. Members of some industrial rock, nu-metal, and darkwave bands also started wearing them on stage. From the late 2000s through early 2010s, the phat pants-inspired bondage pants were a popular sell for chain stores such as Spencer's Gifts and Hot Topic.
