Kuutar is the ruler of the moon and one of the three nature maidens. She is mentioned in Kalevala as one of the air’s nature maidens who weaves fabrics from moon’s gold alongside with Päivätär (Day’s ruler) and Otavatar (the maiden of constellation called Otava, the Great Bear).
Moon was an important celestial body for ancient Finns. It’s phases and events determined everyday life and guided things they did from ordinary household tasks to healing magic and making babies.
